Nothing like a Mozambique Cyclone for some FAST SAILING! (Patrick Childress #37)

Yes, Predictwind’s weather forecasting guaranteed us a Cyclone while sailing down the Mozambique Channel from Tanzania /East Africa to South Africa! But we considered this a perfect weather window on a sailboat! So we hurried to provision and clear out, and we set sail as fast as we could to sail fast to South Africa, trying to catch up to the tail of that cyclone.

Sailing in East Africa assures you some dangers, and some heavy weather sailing. Our sailing life, forces us in to rough seas, lightening storms, and heavy weather sailing with serious navigation decisions sometimes. Brick House is a seaworthy Blue water cruising sailboat ready for stormy seas while we are sailing the world, and in this sailing videos, we explain our heavy weather tactics, weather Routing techniques and why we would chase a cyclone, dodging storms on a passage to South Africa.

Mozambique cyclone Idai devastated Mozambique, as many cyclones do in Mozambique. Offshore Sailboat “Brick House” sails 1000 miles, as far as Bazaruto before another storm at sea sends our sailboat running for shelter behind the sand dune islands, waiting for a good weather window to go the next 700 miles to South Africa, and soon on to the Cape of Storms. This is the sailing life!

Our Iridium GO, and Predictwind, for communications at sea, and for getting weather offshore has been a great improvement for communication at sea, as well as getting weather at sea, and was vital for this semi coastal passage..not an offshore passage I would have made without it! A local weather Router/guru, Des Cason, was also instrumental in helping us get safely down this notoriously dangerous coast of Mozambique and soon, the Wild Coast, and the Cape of storms!

When all 4 weather models...GFS, ECMWF, PWE and PWG showed that we would have north winds for 5-7 days, we knew we had to sail and sail fast. We knew we could not stop sailing because then we would be in an area that should another cyclone start south of Mayotte, we would not be able to sail south until the cyclone was nearly on top of us, so whether we had to motor south or tack back and forth, we just had to sail at least to Bazaruto or not go at all. It was a commitment to keep sailing no matter what. If a cyclone/hurricane HAD cropped up, I suppose we would have taken shelter. But it wouldn’t have been a pleasure stop, it would have been to hide from the worst and then get underway as quickly thereafter as possible. Being at sea is often safer than being in what seems to be a safe anchorage though...so I did not feel in danger. I was glad we had done a lot of storm preparation for this offshore passage, and that we had a strong seaworthy boat. Preparing for passage for sailing to South Africa was a little anxiety provoking. The storm was also the strongest we had faced since Samoa in 2011. The waves got big pretty quickly, and until we were able to turn downwind, the boat was crashing more than I liked it to. Luckily we were sailing with the winds for the first 800 miles.

Check out Predictwind & the Iridium GO for Passage Planning and weather routing. Getting Weather at sea is a challenge you shouldn’t have to experience by surprise...you should know what is coming for bad weather, as well as for calm seas, currents, and other.
