The preservation:
Silt burial created oxygen-free environment, preventing decay of wood, stone, and metal artifacts.
Historical impact:
Proved ancient historian Herodotus was describing real places, not myths. Changed how archaeologists approach legendary cities mentioned in ancient texts.
Heracleion remains underwater, accessible only to research divers. Artifacts displayed in Alexandria National Museum.
