How to Paint a Sky - Acrylic Painting Lesson

Colours: Titanium white, Phthalo blue, Ultramarine blue and small amounts of any warm colours (red, yellow, raw sienna and browns).

Brushes: Wide 75mm synthetic brush. 50mm decorating brush and an optional fan brush.

Cover the canvas with white paint working upwards from a line below where you expect the horizon to be. Apply phthalo blue near the top of the canvas and ultramarine above it. Use the wide synthetic brush to blend the colours together working down toward the horizon. Add more white if needed. The blues should fade as they mix with the white near the bottom of the sky.

Add a small amount of your chosen warm colours (reds, yellows, browns) at the bottom of the sky. Use the wide synthetic brush or a fan brush to gradually blend them upwards.

Use the fan brush to remove any unwanted brush strokes or excess colour.

If you are painting a seascape use similar blues as used in the sky to create a horizon line and water.
