Beautiful Drives: Ambleside to Ullswater via Kirkstone Pass

Kirkstone Pass is found in the Lake District, Cumbria, North West England. This is our journey from Ambleside to Ullswater using Kirkstone Road before joining the Kirkstone Pass.

Our journey starts at Rydal Road Car Park in Ambleside before joining Kirkstone Road and driving along what is quaintly called "The Struggle". After about 3.7 miles we turn left on to Kirkstone Pass [A592] where the Kirkstone Pass Inn can be found. We then continue along the Kirkstone Pass, through Patterdale and Glenridding before stopping at the entrance to Glencoyne Farm by the banks of Ullswater.

Kirkstone Pass has an altitude of 1489ft and is the highest road open to motor traffic in the Lake District. In places the road is as step as 1 in 4 so be warned, this is not a drive to tackle in the
winter or if you lack confidence in yourself or your vehicle.
