Cough Syrup Deaths: Centre's Big Crackdown On Coldrif | NEXT IAS

Coldrif Cough Syrup is at the center of a tragic health crisis.
Since early September, at least 14 children in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan have died from suspected kidney failure linked to the syrup. Tests revealed 48.6% diethylene glycol (DEG) — a toxic chemical far above safe limits. Several states, including UP, MP, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala, have now banned the syrup under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940.
Did you know? Cough medicines are generally not advised for children under five.
