The Oyster case represents a breakthrough in the world of horology. Rolex invented the world's first ever waterproof watch case in 1926. It was possible as a result of its patented system which consisted of screwing down the bezel, case back and winding crown against the middle case.

A tiny treasure of technical ingenuity, Rolex's winding crown is what brings it all together. The crown is composed of about 10 parts, which create a hermetic seal when screwed onto the watch case.

"Rolex Twinlock and Triplock winding crowns use two or three sealed zones to ensure watertight security akin to a SUBMARINE'S HATCH."

A composition of durability and elegance, the Rolex Oyster watch case is an exciting synthesis of form and function, no mater the metal it's crafted in.

You'd think being first would be enough but not by a long shot. Rolex is one of the few companies that has remained consistent in how obsessively it tests its products. The brand has developed quite the reputation and they want to make sure that whether you're exploring the deepest oceans or the highest mountain summits, that their watchmaking is reliable.

In order to live up to the high expectations, every watch goes through extreme testing prior to even leaving the Rolex grounds. When it comes to waterproof ability, they utilize what's known as the Deepsea Test Tank. It simulates the pressure at 4,875 metres (16,000 feet) below sea level.
