Barcelona is going to be a tyre race. And nobody is entirely sure how it plays out.

Pirelli went one step softer for 2026 — C2, C3 and C4 in play — specifically to encourage multiple stops and make the hard compound relevant. The plan is working, perhaps more than expected. Friday's track temperatures hit 50-52°C in both sessions, producing degradation figures of two to three tenths per lap — a significant number. Both front and rear axles suffering. All three compounds showing similar degradation rates, which means there's no obvious preferred tyre for the race.

Most teams kept their two sets of hard tyres unused on Friday — a clear signal they view the C2 as a genuine race compound. Only Verstappen, Ocon and Bearman tried it in practice.

The result is genuine strategic uncertainty. Two stops is the most likely outcome. Three is firmly on the table. Early stoppers could force others into reactive strategies. Tyre management — something teams have largely ignored in the first six races while chasing power unit understanding — suddenly becomes the defining variable on Sunday.
