I almost Killed my patient | Nursing ABCs

I almost killed my patient . . . I don't like to admit it, but I learned a very valuable lesson the HARD WAY! If this will help someone else to avoid the mistake I made, then I feel it is my responsibility to share with everyone.

So what happened? It all came down to prioritization and staying vigilant on my Nursing ABCs. Had I done that, I could have avoided this mistake.

I was finally taking on my first post-op patient completely “on my own”. As my patient started to come out of anesthesia he was ready to start breathing on his own. Things were going just as planned . . .I was thinking, "I’ve got this! First thing I do is start clearing all the IV pumps of all the lines. This is going to be a cinch." Next, I start getting ready for extubation - let’s get that tube out of his throat so he can start breathing again. But suddenly. . .I notice something; my patient is no longer showing signs of agitation from the tube. Fear gripped me... Watch the full video to find out what happened.
