Education Now: Practicing Antiracism in Your School

The disparities that students face today, magnified during the COVID-19 outbreak, are rooted in systemic racism that has been ingrained in education for generations. But even as we reevaluate the system, we must also recognize the critical impact of individual educators who are committed to the fight against racism and injustice. Educators — people — can help change and improve the system, so that it supports and nurtures all young people.

During this conversation, we will identify how educators can act to confront racism and white supremacy in their everyday roles, and what it means to embrace and work toward antiracism in your school setting. Tracie Jones, HGSE’s Director of Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging, will be joined by HGSE’s Christina “V” Villarreal, a longtime teacher and school leader in East Oakland, CA, who now directs the Teacher Education master’s program, and José Vilson, a math teacher, writer, and activist in New York City who is the executive director of EduColor. About Tracie Jones:
Tracie Jones is the Director of Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging at HGSE. She manages and executes diversity and inclusion programs for students, directs the Equity Fellows programs, advises cultural student organizations, and ensures that all members of the HGSE community are welcome and supported. Prior to HGSE, she was the vessel operations coordinator for Amistad America, tracing the slave trade across the Atlantic Ocean on a tall ship. Her commitment to diversity and inclusion was forged on that journey while working with the Sankofa study abroad program, engaging college students on facilitating conversations on race, equity, and inclusion. When she is not at HGSE, Tracie is working with Adventure Girlz, her non-profit organization whose mission is to guide at risk adolescent Black girls out of the school to prison pipeline; introducing them to social justice campaigns and adventures such as surfing, zip-lining and sailing.

About Christina “V” Villarreal, Ed.M.’05:
Christina Villarreal serves as the faculty director of the Teacher Education Program and continues to teach the Ethnic Studies and Education course at HGSE. Her research explores enactments of humanizing pedagogies, racial literacy, and radical healing in secondary social studies classrooms through portraiture. She also serves as a radical healing trainer with Flourish Agenda, and as a consultant with Acosta Educational Partnership. She spent nearly a decade teaching and learning with the youth of East Oakland, CA where she taught middle school social studies and served as an assistant principal.

About José Luis Vilson:
José Luis Vilson is a full-time math teacher, writer, speaker, and activist in New York City, NY. He is the author of This Is Not A Test: A New Narrative on Race, Class, and Education. has spoken about education, math, and race for a number of organizations and publications. He is a National Board Certified teacher, a Math for America Master Teacher, and the executive director of EduColor, an organization dedicated to race and social justice issues in education.
