Burnout: physical or mental collapse caused by overwork or stress.
A phenomenon that most people experience at some point in their lives, burnout is a haunting and mysterious thing to experience. It wreaks havoc in our lives and sometimes it catches us off-guard.
I made this film primarily to test out my new camera - the GH5 paired with an Olympus 12-40 f2.8. Definitely a random hodge-podge of video clips strung together but hopefully it made some sense.
Here's the script if you're interested:
A big sign of the state that we’re in, is when for two days in a row we don’t feel like we have the energy to get up. When you just want to sit there, doing nothing, because there won’t be any free time to do absolutely nothing.
In your heart, there is a beating energy. In your mind, there is a truth screaming to be released. In your soul, there is an adventure waiting to be lived. But, in your body, is exhaustion - exhaustion from trying to do it all at once, and in doing so, stifling it altogether.
Sooner or later, you run out of what kept you going - your fuel, your ambition, your drive. And eventually, you’re not burning. You’re just burnt out.
I wonder if we’ll ever learn the difference between working and pushing.
Today, I have four meetings - and they all matter. But surrounding those meetings is the weight of the important things. The things that delicately whisper, saying “Don’t forget about us, we’re the reason why you wake up, the reason why you’ll feel okay when you go to sleep. Without us, those meetings mean nothing.”
Yesterday, I was sick - from work, from the push I’ve been giving myself to the edge of the cliff. I took a nap, and that moved me a few feet away, back from the edge, and then, to make up for it, I pushed myself even farther. Even harder. And I think I went a little too far. Too far.
