The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) has launched the NPS Swasthya Pension Scheme (NSPS) to provide financial support for out-patient and in-patient medical expenses. Introduced as a Proof of Concept (PoC) under the regulatory sandbox framework, the scheme is voluntary and contributory in nature.
Open to all Indian citizens, NSPS allows flexible contributions and enables partial withdrawals for medical expenses up to 25% of the subscriber’s own contributions. In cases of critical inpatient treatment, subscribers can opt for a premature exit with 100% lump-sum withdrawal if medical costs exceed 70% of the accumulated corpus. The scheme aims to strengthen India’s social security framework by linking long-term savings with healthcare needs.
