Farhad Bandesh Band - Flee from War (Our Rights)

This song and filmclip by detainee Farhad Bandesh has come straight out of Lombrum detention centre Manus Island.

Farhad Bandesh is a 36 year old Kurdish man who has been in detention on Manus Island for four and a half years after fleeing from Iran.

Amongst other parts to his story, he paints, designs jewellery and writes songs.

David Bridie has been communicating with Farhad for the past 6 months after a mutual friend in Lorengau on Manus connected them.

Last week Farhad sent down a song he had written. The song along with the clip were recorded on his phone which were sent down in segments. Farhad asked whether a band could be organised. He wanted to release the song to radio, to humanise his and fellow friends plight. ”Flee From War” (Our Rights) has a Kurdish punk attitude to it. It refers to the plight of Kurdish and Rohingyan refugees fleeing madness only to end up in purgatory. The band includes Richard Mogu, Mark McCartney and Jake Lilley. The film clip was done by Andrew Prowse featuring footage Farhad took on his phone, his paintings, photos by fellow detainees Mos and Kazem Kazemi and other archival shots
