Santa CASA della MADONNA DI LORETO ( Black Madonna) (part1)
The Basilica of the Holy House is one of the main places of Marian worship and one of the most important and visited Marian shrines in the Catholic world. It represents one of the most important Gothic-Renaissance monuments in Italy, where the greatest architects of the time worked. Inside the basilica, Catholics worship the remains of what, according to tradition, is the Holy House of Nazareth, where Jesus lived. The history of the Shrine begins on 10 December 1294, with the arrival of the house which is once inhabited by the family of the Virgin Mary in Nazareth and where the Madonna would receive the announcement of the birth of Jesus. At first the precious relic was raised and covered by a vault, then it was surrounded by arcades, then by a small church and finally by the present Basilica. In 1468, by the will of the bishop of Recanati, work began for the construction of the great temple, both to protect the Holy House, and to accommodate the large and ever-growing crowd of pilgrims. Inside the Basilica, under the dome, is the Holy House of Nazareth, where, according to the devotional tradition, the Virgin Mary received the Annunciation. The house is made up of three walls, without ceiling and foundations, made entirely of terracotta bricks. The walls are typical of ancient Nazarene construction, and tradition has it that they were leaning against a cave, the one that is today in the Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth. It is entirely covered by an admirable and valuable
marble coating designed by Donato Bramante in 1509 at the behest of Pope Julius II, and realized only about ten years later. The studies carried out on the stones of the Holy House would confirm their Palestinian origin: they are mostly sandstones, traceable in the Nazareth area and worked according to the technique used by the Nabataeans, a people bordering on the Jews, but also used in Palestine. The Madonna of Loreto, also known as the Black Madonna, covered with a characteristic jeweled mantle called Dalmatic, is the statue venerated in the Holy House.
