The Man Who saved Jim Carrey

You may not recognize Wayne Fleming, but his influence changed comedy forever. Known as the Canadian Father of Stand-Up Comedy, Wayne became the first comedian to perform at the legendary Just for Laughs Festival—but his greatest legacy was helping a struggling teenage comic named Jim Carrey.

After Jim bombed at Yuck Yucks and considered walking away from stand-up, Wayne saw his potential. He mentored him, taught him the fundamentals of comedy, and encouraged him to try again.

During Wayne’s 36th birthday show, he gave up his own encore to introduce the young, unknown Jim Carrey. Jim took the stage, performed his impressions, and brought the house down.

Wayne later appeared in films including Cinderella Man, Fun with Dick and Jane, and Heartstopper, but his proudest achievement was watching his protégé become a worldwide star. In 2004, Jim returned the honor by having Wayne introduce him at Canada’s Walk of Fame, where he delivered a hilarious and emotional tribute to his longtime mentor.

Wayne and Jim remained best friends until Wayne’s death from lung disease in 2016. His story proves that one person’s encouragement can change an entire life—and the comedy world along with it.
