ANTIQUES ROADSHOW visits HEXHAM!: Fascinating Antiques & Discussion (Jan '91)

ANTIQUES ROADSHOW is a long running British television series about the appraisal of antiques. On 27th January 1991 the programme's visit to the Market Town of Hexham in Northumberland was broadcast. Right in the heart of Roman Wall Country!

This edition was filmed at the town's Wentworth Leisure Centre and was hosted by Hugh Scully, who was by far the longest-serving presenter of the programme, from 1981 to 2000.

The programme starts on location at Housesteads on the nearby Roman Wall. Hadrian's Wall. Hexham Abbey is the jewel in Hexham's Crown - and in the 7th Century the Church was considered the finest and largest North of the Alps.

Renowned wood engraver Thomas Bewick was one of Northumberland's most famous sons, and his work is very highly regarded across the World. The programme takes a look at an extremely rare copy of Bewick's Chillingham Bull - and explains exactly WHY only 10 prints were ever taken!

A fascinating look at the amazing items that were brought through the door, including a personalised Jug dated 1792, a pair of A De Groot paintings (or are they?), Japanese Porcelain, and a 1751 Gold watch!
