The significance of the wall is that it's the only remaining piece from the Second Temple of Jerusalem, built over 2000 years ago. The original temple was destroyed in 70 AD by the Romans and all the Jewish people were exiled from the city. When they returned later, the only remaining wall became a site of pilgrimage. It was where the Jewish people came to lament their tragic losses at the hands of the Romans, which is where it got the name the Wailing Wall.
