Tamil Nadu fishermen return to sea as 61-day fishing ban ends

Thousands of fishermen across Tamil Nadu are preparing to return to sea as the annual 61-day fishing ban on mechanized boats and trawlers comes to an end.

At Chennai's Casimedu Fishing Harbour, fishermen offered prayers for a safe and prosperous season before setting out on their first voyages. More than 800 boats are expected to resume operations as fishing activity restarts along the coast.

The annual fishing ban is imposed during the breeding season to help conserve marine resources and ensure sustainable fish populations. After spending two months repairing vessels and preparing equipment, fishermen are hopeful of a successful catch and improved earnings in the coming months.
