How to Practice Jumps and Play Faster
Are you still stuck on that hard passage that you're working on? Or are you still trying to learn Unravel?
In this video, I'm discussing my favorite tips and strategies for practicing jumps, speeding up pieces, and even a bit of how to perform. Again, there is no substitute for hard work, but hopefully these tips well help you practice smarter and more efficiently!
This is Part 2 of my How to Practice Difficult Piano Material series. I discussed how to practice runs and general approaches to learning new passages, so if you missed that, be sure to check it out here: https://youtu.be/7van4buJ2fg
As per usual, take things slowly and carefully, especially when the material is hard. Be patient with yourself and don't get hurt!
And of course, good luck with your practicing!
Quick note about what I say in the video: I seem to stress muscle memory a lot when muscle memory is arguably the worst type of memory to rely on in sticky situations. However, within the context of playing fast runs or jumps, it is quite impossible to carefully measure out the distance of each jump or to cognitively think of each and every single note, and that's where muscle memory has to come into play.
Tiny addendum to Tip 7: I talked about focusing on the melody, then proceeded to talk about a melodic element that wasn't the main melody in the piece. I meant to describe melody as in important melodic elements instead of just the main melody. So coming back to the example I used, with Tip 6 I know I've grinded the phrasing and melodic elements into the right hand already, and I also know that I want to hear the left hand slurs articulated slightly to provide a fun little motif, so I focused on that when playing.
