In this Genealogy Tutorial I discuss the new Family Tree feature on DNA Painter with DNA filters, an awesome new Genetic Genealogy tool. This was first announced by Jonny Perl of DNA painter in my RootsTech interview with him just a few months back. This tool is currently limited to subscribers but sometime in August 2019 the tool will be available to all users, although those without a subscription will be limited to just one family tree. To create a new tree you can either build it by hand or upload a Gedcom file. When building by hand just go to the view/edit option when hovering over the node you want to edit. For Gedcom file uploads you can make anyone in the file the 'focal person' of the tree but at the moment there is no way to change the focal person, so you would need to upload the Gedcom file again if you want a different focal person. Once the family tree is built then you can change view with the generation slider or zoom in / zoom out options while in the Tree view. Another view is the Fan chart view, which is especially useful when using the DNA filters. The DNA filters are overlay maps which allow you to visualize which ancestors you would inherit your MtDNA, Y-DNA, and X-DNA. This makes it really easy to identify possible shared ancestry with new genetic matches whose DNA test results also share MtDNA, Y-DNA, or X-DNA.The X-DNA (x-chromosome) overlay is likely the most useful overlay. The Fan view allows the user to hover over each ancestor's name to see the details on that ancestor and it even has the relationship path pop up on the left of the screen. If you have proven pedigree collapse, where you know you descend from ancestors more than once, this new feature automatically accounts for this. When hovering over one of these ancestors in the fan view, it will highlight all known relationship paths from you to the ancestor as well as tell you their defined relation to you (i.e. 7th great grandfather and 10th great grandfather). This new Family Tree feature also has a text view of the tree, multiple color palettes, and a sharing feature.
