Because cocoa was rationed during World War II, chocolate was in short supply, and so bakery owner Pietro Ferrero used hazelnuts as a substitute, which are plentiful in the Piedmont region of Italy. The concoction was originally shaped into a loaf and could be sliced and served on bread, but by 1951, a creamy, spreadable version had been introduced. In 1964, Ferrero's son, Michele, tweaked the recipe and the Nutella we know and love was born!
