That wasn’t the case for The Big Bang Theory. They gave everyone a satisfying conclusion and gave viewers a high note to go out on. Each of the characters either became parents, got the recognition they deserved, or learned to accept themselves. They also got to spend their last few moments together.

This finale was well-made, but it came quicker than originally planned after Jim Parson’s sudden departure. He dropped a bomb on the cast and crew during season 12 when he said he wanted to leave. The Big Bang Theory would never be the same without Sheldon Cooper, so that season had to be the last. The issue wasn’t that he wanted to move on but the way this news was delivered.
Imagine if you were sat down for a meeting one day with a tearful Jim explaining that he had to leave. All of a sudden, your work on one of the most successful sitcoms of all time was coming to a close.

It’s a surprising shift that hit without enough advanced notice. The cast reacted to it in different ways. Some of them understood, others were hurt, but they all were surprised. Jim’s departure wasn’t a death blow to any of the cast’s careers. They all went on to star in other projects. They’ll be remembered forever for the laughs they gave us as their nerdy characters but have managed to go beyond that. It was a breakout hit for all of them.
