Why progressives ruin cities | LIVE STREAM

“Prosperity requires cities,” says Michael Shellenberger in his new book, “San Fransicko: Why Progressives Ruin Cities” (Harper, 2021), “and our cities are being ruined.” A self-identified progressive Democrat, Mr. Shellenberger observed the San Francisco Bay Area declining and asked what residents were getting for their high taxes.

After 20 years of voting for ballot initiatives that promised to address drug addiction, mental illness, and homelessness, why did he witness these problems worsening? Why had progressive Democratic elected officials stopped enforcing many laws against certain groups, including unhoused people suffering from mental illness and drug addiction in key West Coast cities?

Join Mr. Shellenberger and AEI’s Sally Satel and Ryan Streeter as they discuss “San Fransicko,” which serves as a cautionary tale to other urban centers, addresses those questions, and sets forth a constructive proposal for restoring human dignity, not just law and order.
