Abduction and murder, time travel, desire and lies – Netflix’s first German-language original drama series Dark weaves a web of intrigue that unfolds across several generations of the members of a small community. First appears a complex thriller that layers multiple characters over a 60-year period. What at first appears opaque gradually reveals its mysteries through twists and cliffhangers. Presenting practical cases from Dark’s development and production, the series' creators reveal their approach to “knowledge management,“ the art of knowing how and when to flaunt and reveal secrets about your characters and their (inter)actions. From the points of view of both director and writer, the showrunners demonstrate how constructing binge-inducing suspense in drama series is all about how and when to play the right card.
