Metro Council considers expanding free legal help for Nashville renters facing eviction

A proposal is moving through Metro Council could expand access to free legal help for low-income renters facing eviction in Davidson County.

The plan would formally establish a Right to Counsel program through Metro Planning, aimed at helping tenants navigate eviction proceedings with legal representation. Supporters say the effort is designed to keep families housed and prevent vulnerable residents from losing their homes because they cannot afford an attorney.

The program partners with organizations including the Legal Aid Society, the Nashville Hispanic Bar Association, and other nonprofit groups to provide legal assistance to tenants facing eviction.

According to a report from Eviction Right to Counsel, more than 1,000 Davidson County residents received help through the program in 2025 alone.

The report also found the program generated an estimated $3.3 million in direct financial impact for clients — averaging roughly $12,000 per household assisted. Advocates say those savings can help families avoid homelessness, maintain employment, and stay connected to schools and community resources.
