What Makes An Amazing Film Opening?

What makes an amazing or memorable opening to a film? Here I’m looking at the opening sequences of movies – not the first act or just the titles, but the first few minutes whether that’s with or without titles. The opening of a movie I think isn’t defined by time – something like Once Upon A Time The West has an opening sequence of something like 13 minutes, Soylent Green’s opening is just over 2.

Sorry for the drop in audio quality here. My XLR picked up static from a power cable and I had to remove the hum at the expense of making it a bit tinny. As usual, I only have myself to blame. Sad face of a bald yellow man.

Films mentioned: Once Upon A Time In The West (1968), Soylent Green (1973), Manos: The Hands Of Fate (1966), Blade Runner (1982), Star Wars Episode 1 - A Phantom Menace (1999), Star Wars Episode 4 - A New Hope (1977), UP (2009), Enter The Void (2009), A Clockwork Orange (1971), Come And See (1985), Wall-E (2008), Ran (1985), The Revenant (2015).
