One 5-carat ruby vs. five 1-carat rubies. Different investments. Different categories.

One 5-carat ruby and five 1-carat rubies are not the same investment. They're not even in the same category.

The price difference is the first signal. A 5-carat ruby of top quality doesn't cost five times a 1-carat ruby of the same quality. It costs closer to ten times more, sometimes significantly more than that. Scarcity compounds with size. The geological rarity of producing a clean, vivid, unheated crystal large enough to yield a 5-carat finished stone is exponentially greater than what it takes to produce five separate 1-carat stones. The market prices that gap precisely.

But the more important distinction is what each category actually represents in the market.

One-carat stones, even in top quality, exist in the B2B trade. Dealers buy them, sort them, move them through supply chains to jewelers and brands who set them. The velocity is high. The margin per stone is not. Holding 1-carat stones as an investment requires being embedded in that market, knowing who buys, maintaining relationships, staying current on demand cycles. It's not passive. It's a business function. Someone who buys five 1-carat stones thinking they've built a gemstone portfolio has actually bought inventory that requires active management to convert back to value.

A well-selected 5-carat stone operates differently. The buyer pool is smaller, which means a quick sale isn't guaranteed, but the buyers who exist for that material are serious and capitalized. Auction houses handle material at that level regularly. Dealers like us are interested in acquiring it. When the time comes to liquidate, the path exists and the price reflects the genuine rarity of what's being offered.

The selection requirement is strict. The 5-carat stone has to be genuinely exceptional: color that meets the standard, clarity that holds up under examination, no treatment that removes it from the investment tier. If it is all of those things, it holds value and appreciates over time in a way that the 1-carat tier simply doesn't.

If your goal is to invest in gemstones, not to trade them, the direction is clear.
