00:00 Singapore #1 in Saving
Did you know, Singaporeans are one of the world’s biggest savers. According to the 2017 World Bank data, Singapore is ranked first, saving 46% of its GDP, just ahead of China.
Therefore, we need to share our hacks in order to maintain that lead fellow friends!
2:00 Hack 1: Housing
Hack 1: Opt for a shared room instead of living in a room by yourself. Additionally, try to find places that include utilities and has the landlord staying in. Usually, places with live-in landlords tend to be $100+ cheaper per month, potentially saving you an additional 10-20% in rental! If you own a place, you could also house hack to earn passive income and further reduce the cost of living by staying in one of the rooms and renting out the rest.
4:28 Hack 2: Food
Hack 2: Personally, it is more costly to cook than to buy out in Singapore because food is relatively cheap here. Eating in coffee shops and hawker centers is the cheapest food option in Singapore, additionally, I often eat from the same store and add extra ingredients at a fraction of the price. After being a frequent customer, I often get small favors like a larger portion, and with that, I sometimes keep the excess as leftovers to stretch my dollars. Additionally, I realised that it is cheaper (and fewer calories!) to have fewer larger meals a day, than to have many small meals in a day, further reducing my expenses
6:42 Hack 3: Transportation
Hack 3: Public transport is the most budget way to travel during the day. After midnight when public transportation is no longer available, I opt for car-sharing services like BlueSG versus taking a Grab in order to save about 50% of the money. Additionally, I use google pay to pay for public transport to get both google pay rewards and my credit card cashback!
7:32 Hack 4: Phone Plan
Hack 4: I use sim-only plans because it is cheaper, and I maximize my phone's dual-sim card function by having two sims cards that are the most valuable in its category, TPG Sim card for its massive data, at 50GB for $10. and Circle's Life $0 plan that has great connectivity to cover for TPG's lack of coverage.
9:03 Hack 5: Shopping
Hack 5: I try to buy all I need online, whenever there is a massive sale, and try to get as much cashback as possible, such as Shoppee vouchers, Google Pay rewards, Credit card rebates, and more! This hack saved me so much money compared to shopping at the usual price.
Hope you enjoyed my 5 #frugal hacks and I hope to catch you around soon!
