Using extracts from personal family collections, diaries, handbills and other records, the range of possibilities for entertainment available in London will be discussed. From sight-seeing to exhibitions, events which appealed either to the downright curious or to those with more cultured tastes will be covered, including public punishments, prostitution, sporting activities, gambling, the circus, playhouses and exhibitions. Travel and home entertainments (such as music and drinking and other pursuits) will also be covered.
The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/entertainment-in-london-in-the-18th-century
