A patient comes to the office with a peculiar problem. She does not have fungal toenails, but the nail on her right big toe has an odd shape. This is what is called onychodystrophy, or a misshapened nail. This can occur from previous trauma to the toe, recurring ingrown toenail, a bone spur under the nail, ill-fitting shoes, or any combination of these. Fortunately, she is not in any pain. Treatment for this condition includes regular trimming of the nail, nail softening agents such as urea, and better fitting shoes. Due to privacy concerns, the patient requested not to speak during the recording.
