What Does the Bible Say About Art?

When we look to the heroes of our faith, we often turn to Hebrews 11 with familiar names like Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Sarah. But Bezalel?

Exodus 31 tells us that Bezalel was filled with God’s Spirit, with wisdom, understanding, and ability in every craft to design artistic works in gold, silver, and bronze, to cut gemstones for mounting, and to carve wood for work in every craft. Bezalel wasn’t just AN artist - he was THE artist. He led every skilled craftsman created the tents, the Ark, the Mercy Seat, the alter, the holy garments, and they were to make all of them according to how God required.

Art is a mysterious thing. Before there was nothing, then through the hands of skilled and talented hands, new beautiful things are brought into existence. Just like when God created, there was nothing, then there were beautiful things, we too have been made in his likeness as creators, as artists.

Bezalel didn’t create works of art for himself - but for God - then he taught others how to worship God with their hands. How are you worshipping with your hands?
