How to play Tom Misch's "It Runs Through Me". Bossa Nova style Guitar Groove over Jazz-Hip-Hop fusion. And that Bass line.... so good.
I should probably apologise for the timing issues in a few of the clips... some of which I might blame on trying to maintain a sync between my camera, my guitar input latency, my recording software's metronome and my prerecorded backing track - But ultimately.... well, ultimately I can only blame it on bad guitar playing... and the coffee. Yes, it was the coffee! ;)
I've tried to present everything as clearly as I can within the constraints of a short and hopefully not too boring video. I should have stressed in the video that I am giving the rhythmic feel of that picking/plucking pattern - Not a note for note rhythmic transcription of the original recording. So, feel free to apply your creative freedom to this style of playing; over other chord progressions, faster or slower etc. Or if you wish you can sit down with the original and learn to mimic it exactly using what you've learned in the video. Likewise with the lead intro; I prefer to play it based on the d string 9th fret root, with less sliding, but it made more sense to show a more "slidey" mostly-one-string version, as you can clearly hear the sliding in the recording. Also, when I mention the rhythmic change on that B/C# chord, I don't think it's very clear, but if you listen to the original, you should be able to hear the shift in emphasis.
I am confident that this lesson/tutorial will give you a solid foundation to start playing the song and maybe even inspire you to look into some of the roots behind this style, here's a short list if you're interested:
Antonio Carlos Jobim (Brazilian Composer)
Ellis Regina (Amazing Brazilian Singer) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRqI5R6L7ow
Joao and Astrud Gilberto - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5QfXjsoNe4
Gilberto Gil (Brazilian Guitarist) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nOaAoa1bWA
And of course feel free to list any more you can think of in the comments below!
