Why Do We Weigh Our Chinchillas?
Hey guys!
Just wanted to share some information about weighing our chinchillas since we have had so many great questions over messages.
Small pets should be weighed regularly which can help keep track of their health. Chinchillas are especially important to weigh since their fluffiness can easily hide weight loss that might be more visible on other animals. Chin weights vary between pets (ours range from 500-700 grams!) and do fluctuate week to week, but the important part is the consistency long term. Any sudden big declines or noticeable decline over a long period of time should be noted and discussed with your vet. Usually, for things like dental issues which are often the main culprit of weight loss, there are other signs that go along with the weight decline. Drooling is common; excessive powdered pellet remains in the food bowl; lethargy, pawing at the mouth, and generally looking uncomfortable (like unusual hunching and squinting).
Changes in diet can also affect weight, and things that are high calorie like apple sticks and treats can cause weight to change too; chins eat the bark off apple sticks which is pretty high calorie! Aside from health issues, pickiness can also play a role in a chinchilla not eating their hay or pellets. After ruling out any health problems, consider switching brands of hay! And remember, pellets should always be ONLY pellets, with nothing else mixed in!
