There’s a Drone Over our Airpark Runway!!

Drones and airports don’t mix well, most pilots fear inflight collisions with drones and their use near an active runway is heavily regulated for safety. Today drones are often used for aerial survey work, local development required the use of a drone at Lynden Municipal Airport (38W) so two local pilots with a pair of air-band radios and the FAA licensed drone pilot worked together to facilitate the survey safely. A Notam was issued and the local traffic pattern was monitored for any landing aircraft, the drone would have landed immediately if an airplane entered the pattern for landing. It took 20 minutes for the drone to fly it’s preprogrammed route via GPS, in all 2,000 photos were taken which will then become an “ortho mosaic” of the subject property. Everything went perfectly and we learned a lot about the use of commercial drones for survey work - really cool! 👍
