India’s long-standing relationship with gold—rooted in both culture and economy—has entered a new phase with the launch of the Jonnagiri Gold Project in Kurnool. Developed by Geomysore Services India Pvt Ltd, this project marks a historic milestone as India’s first large-scale private gold mine since Independence.
From the era of Emperor Ashoka to the modern vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat, gold has played a crucial role in shaping India’s economic narrative. However, despite its rich legacy, India continues to depend heavily on gold imports—bringing in over 800 tonnes annually, which significantly impacts foreign exchange reserves.
Currently, domestic production remains limited, with Hutti Gold Mines being the only major producer. Meanwhile, the closure of Kolar Gold Fields in 2000 left a major gap in large-scale gold mining.
The Jonnagiri project is expected to change this landscape by boosting domestic production, reducing import dependence, and strengthening India’s resource security. It also aligns with India’s broader push toward self-reliance in critical sectors.
