LAMES 2024|The Inaugural Sonnenschein Service Prize – Honoring Andreu Mas-Colell
The Econometric Society is proud to award the inaugural Sonnenschein Service Prize in 2024 to Andreu Mas-Colell (Barcelona School of Economics), in recognition of his exceptional service to the profession and to the Society, in the spirit and tradition of Hugo Sonnenschein.
From his early days as a graduate student at the University of Minnesota—where he overlapped with Hugo Sonnenschein—Andreu has embodied a deep commitment to both scholarship and service. In addition to his path-breaking contributions to economic theory, Andreu has been a tireless supporter of colleagues, students, and the broader academic community.
His leadership within the Econometric Society includes serving as Editor of Econometrica (1988–1992) and as President in 1993. His influential works, including Noncooperative Approaches to the Theory of Perfect Competition (1982), The Theory of General Economic Equilibrium: A Differentiable Approach (1990), and Microeconomic Theory (1995, with Jerry Green and Michael Whinston), have left a lasting mark on the field.
Widely regarded as a mentor and academic “father” or “grandfather” by generations of economists, Andreu has played a transformative role in advancing economic research and education globally. In particular, his leadership helped establish the Barcelona School of Economics as a world-class institution and the European Research Council as a premier public funder of scientific research in Europe.
