Gold and silver are undergoing a long-overdue correction, triggered by a post-Diwali slowdown in physical demand from key Asian buyers.

Silver’s deeper correction relative to gold once again highlights the liquidity gap between the two markets—silver’s liquidity is roughly nine times lower—amplifying both rallies and selloffs.

The structural drivers behind this year’s historic rallies remain intact, leaving metals that are no longer overbought but still under-owned in portfolios well supported longer term.

In this video Rafi Farber calls the plunge in gold and silver “peculiar” for three reasons. First, SLV’s borrow fee spiked to ~20%, signalling intense demand to short the most liquid silver ETF ahead of the break.

Second, despite heavy volume and a sharp price drop, COMEX open interest barely budged, implying shorts did not meaningfully cover; instead, new buyers stepped in to absorb selling. Third, physical signals diverged: COMEX logged sustained, unusually large daily deliveries in a non-front month, while GLD’s bullion holdings were unchanged on one of its worst price days—both consistent with dip-buying rather than liquidation. He also notes rising reported inventories in Shanghai, framing the episode as relocation and accumulation rather than exit.

Farber’s macro frame is that intermittent dollar “short squeezes” will keep producing violent sell-offs until the Federal Reserve’s “final” bailout cycle, after which he expects a persistent bull leg in monetary metals. His practical counsel is behavioural: maintain emotional balance, avoid leverage, and use deep pullbacks to add gradually rather than trade momentum. In his view, the structure of this sell-off—shorts still underwater, strong delivery activity, and ETF stability—suggests limited capitulation by bears and steady accumulation by patient buyers, setting the stage for further upside once funding stress abates.
