Disoriented by a combination of high-velocity winds, dense fog, and attraction to artificial lights, the birds meet fatal accidents. Although often referred to as ‘bird suicides,’ scientists believe this is an accidental event caused by environmental disorientation — making Jatinga one of nature’s most unsettling and unexplained mysteries.
