Khrushchyovka is a type of low-cost, cement-paneled or brick three- to five-storied apartment building which was developed in the USSR during the early 1960s, when Nikita Khrushchev was the main person of the Soviet Union. We all know the extent to which Soviet architecture can be brutalist. But Khrushchyovkas are taking it to extreme. They are probably the most SOVIET BUILDINGS OF ALL TIME. They remain recognisable, and not always in a good way: the popular nickname for them, khruschobi, is a portmanteau with the Russian word for “slum”. By the 1950s, the issue of providing housing for the builders of the Soviet Union, who brought a bright future closer, became very acute. It became strategically important to prove by deeds that "oh, it's good to live in a Soviet country!" Therefore, in the first post-war years, the leading engineers of Mosproyekt were tasked with quickly developing a technology for fast-built cheap housing with small-sized but separate apartments for Soviet families.
To provide construction sites with ready-made materials, 402 factories were founded throughout the country, producing identical reinforced concrete rectangles that were fastened at the construction site without cement, using welding. A simple house structure with the right number of workers could be assembled in just 2 weeks! The same amount of time was required for the minimum interior and exterior decoration, heat and sound insulation. The history of mankind has never known such a scale and pace of construction!
For a quarter of a century, from the late 1950s to the mid-1980s, almost 300 million square meters were commissioned in the USSR - all these were "Khrushchyovkas". Nowadays, this is 1/9 of the total domestic housing stock. For most Soviet workers, moving into a separate apartment in such a house was the ultimate dream, because before that, as a rule, they had to live either in communal apartments or in wooden barracks without amenities.
Despite this, it was clear that new projects were terribly far from the ideal of an exemplary Soviet dwelling. Therefore, the already well-known four- and five-story buildings were declared only a temporary measure - only before the onset of communism, planned for 1980. Which, as you know, did not happen.
