Pasar Lebuh Cecil in Georgetown Penang best local food bazaar

Street food in Malaysia is a big deal around here, but if you’re in Penang, it means an incredible feast of flavors awaits you on every corner. In this port city, shaped by the blending of countless cultures and its colonial past, infused with the scent of the sea and the lushness of rainforests, the food stalls might not seem very appealing at first glance—but they actually offer a layered cuisine that trains your palate by revealing subtle nuances and diverse tastes.

Here, Chinese cuisine meets Malay flavors and blends with Indian influences to form a unique culinary culture, which the locals continue to uphold. If you’re unfamiliar with Southeast Asia, it might feel a bit challenging, but local markets like Pasar Lebuh Cecil—featured in this video—are actually one of the main arteries of Malaysian culture.

If you ever visit, we recommend sitting down at those plastic tables where elderly Chinese uncles sip iced longan juice and chat, and trying the flavors of street stalls that have even made it to the Michelin list for years. This time, we tried duck meat flat rice noodle soup (duck meat kuey teow soup) from a stall named Lum Lai, and bought a pandan cinnamon roll from a chubby old uncle to have with coffee. Prices are around $1.5–2 for noodles, and sweets are about 50 cents. So the price/performance ratio is amazing.

You can get a feel for the market’s atmosphere in the video, but if you get the chance, we wholeheartedly recommend visiting Malaysia—and especially Penang
