WEAK FANTASY | FIRST TIME REACTION | CONSTANZA | NIGHTWISH

#FirstTimeReaction for this week is Weak Fantasy by #Nightwish from their Wembley concert back in 2015.
I can’t believe none of you spilled the beans on this one - I’m grateful! But what a song… score, this is way more than a song! It was a magical ride with much depth as well as in it’s lyrics as in its musical arrangements. AMAZED - totally amazed!
So as far as lyrics go, I do believe I’ve read (or heard) that Tuomas isn’t that much for explaining thoroughly what the songs and the music that he creates are about. He can hint as to a theme but really prefers the listener to make the interpretation themselves - I could be wrong here and perhaps this is for some of the music and not for all or his compositions!?
When it comes to Weak Fantasy I feel that it’s definitely themed around faith and belief and how that can be really destructive at times "he loves you dwelling in fear and sin”, it also becomes interesting when you interpret (religious) text into practise - how differently people can choose to believe in the same thing!
“Fear is a choice you embrace” I just love it, I can’t really add to that - obviously if you are falling from a cliff you should feel fear! But so much of our day-to-day lives that isn't actually scary yet we make it out to be so. If we look at the Old Testament here we have a very frightful God. Someone who is ruthless with the lives of men and who quickly punishes hard. One that won’t stand for other gods taking his place and One who rules over humanity with more fear than awe.
But then remember that these new religions who are just a few thousand years old have been inspired by older philosophies, other faiths and believes from far older tribes and peoples. Most of the Old Testament can be found in Sumerian texts albeit with some variation. It was in ancient Mesopotamia that the starsigns were created and given their names. They linked to the religion of the time, their fables and stories, what we now call mythology once filled humans with faith. How apt isn’t a line like “Witchcraft filling your void” when even today some people follow New Age philosophies in search for something other than religion, making up new forms of paganism by picking, choosing and mixing different older practises with some that still survive. Indigenous philosophies still exist and we all know how colonialism tried to erase *heathens* if not by killing then by forcing their own faith and way of life onto those they conquered.
I could go on but I’ve already written bunch. But feel free to give me your thoughts on the meaning of this amazing score in the comments and I’ll make sure to have the time to read them through and give you my thought on it too.
