Getting into BREEDING and raising PIGS outdoors WITHOUT confinement

How we went from buying a few pigs to farrowing (breeding/birthing) over 100 pigs per year in under two years.

Should you seperate the sows (mother pigs) when they are farrowing or can you leave them in the paddock together?

How many pigs can you expect from each sow and will they all be good mums?

How to avoid having the sows squash their babies - HINT: it's NOT by locking them down in farrowing crates (steel bar cages) like they do in CAFOs (Concentrated Animal Feedlot Operations), but rather having great sows that are fantastic mums.

Selecting mostly for high birth rates and large, lean, fast growing pigs and not putting enough emphasis on good temperaments and great mothering abilities means you have to consider confining them.

We hope you find this interesting and if you have any questions or comments please don't hesitate to place them below.
