Cyprus is an island nation located in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Positioned to the north of the Sinai Peninsula, to the south of the Anatolian Peninsula, and to the west of the Levant, it is technically part of West Asia, yet its cultural affiliations and political landscape are predominantly Southeast European. Ranking as the third-largest and third-most populous island in the Mediterranean, it sits east of Greece, north of Egypt, south of Turkey, and west of Lebanon and Syria. Nicosia serves as both its capital and largest city. The northeastern segment of the island operates under the de facto governance of the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
