LuAnn Captures the Newly Restored, Carl Goldberg, Gentle Lady - Aug 20, 2016

A neighbor of mine who frequents my favorite piloting station (the public dock) requested my assistance in restoring his vintage Carl Goldberg Gentle Lady glider. After performing structural repairs, covering repairs, exchanging stock push-rods for control cables, adjusting the CG and upgrading the two channel AM radio for a four channel FM radio, it was time to take the old girl out for a spin.

After a couple of years with my DLG gliders and some time with a few powered sailplanes, I wasn't quite prepared for the lethargic handling this two channel, polyhedral balsa model. I was really glad that I chose this spot as the poor plane is tough plane to maneuver and the large unobstructed area was definitely needed.

Here you'll see that my areas of lift were very limited and my areas of sink were plentiful. Though I had opportunities to extend my flight time, I was unsuccessful in keeping the craft in an area of lift to sustain the flight for more than a minute at a time.

Though the nostalgia of flying a craft of this vintage is "fun" for a little while, there's nothing like the performance of today's sailplane designs to make for hours of flight time fun.
