I used to think you could build a business the "right way" and never touch it again. Just like I naively thought houses worked that way too.

Then reality hit. Even the best roof needs maintenance and eventual replacement. Skip that upkeep, and you don't just have a deteriorating house—you have one that needs to be torn down because water got in and wood started rotting.

Your business operates under the same laws of entropy.

Here's what changed my perspective: There's this quote from Ender's Game where a character says "I wasn't trying to win this fight. I was trying to win all of the fights." That's exactly how I think about SOPs now.

I'm not just solving today's task or putting out today's fire. I'm building systems to solve all the tasks and all the fires forever.

The goal isn't zero maintenance—that's impossible. The goal is positioning yourself for the least amount of upkeep possible while accepting there will always be some level required.

When you build SOPs with this mindset, you're not just documenting a process. You're creating a foundation that can withstand the natural forces trying to pull your business apart.
