RACISM IN AMERICA | 7 Experiences, but No Police. LET'S DO BETTER | KWSHOPS

I want to start this off by saying that I am grateful for my upbringing and have lived a relatively charmed life. That said, it cannot be denied that there are burdens that I have had in my life, are unlike others who are not also black or POC. To describe this these 7 experiences as what makes a “charmed” life might seem unfathomable to some of you…or to others it may elicit an eye-roll.

This 27 minutes is not a totality of my life experiences. I shared 27 minutes of my encounters with people over the years, and these were the first few to came to the top of my head. There is SO MUCH that I am not displaying for the world to see. SO MUCH that I could share, that is not my story to tell. SO MUCH that I am still dealing with.

But I’m lucky. I’m lucky that I still have enough air in my lungs to share these stories with you. A lot of this is due to the fact that I get a certain set of problems, instead of others. I have not experienced violence. And my story is mine alone.

These are 7. Only 7. Experiences from my own life, and none of them involve American police. Our country, and our society have so much to fix right now. I hope my generation (I am 29) is the last of them to have dealt with what we have had to deal with in my life.

I am heartened by how so many of you have used the last week to listen to voices and take action. But WE ARE NOT DONE. There are so many stories out there, and so many small, and large, and mundane, and transformative things that we need to do in order to set ourselves on the right path.

Don’t let off the gas.

I’ve been sharing a lot on IG http://bit.ly/2KjrZJz @MS.KWSHOPS - please join me over there as well!

You can still get the message while being entertained. I’ve got some Sci-fi, some sitcoms, but also some “boring” stuff. It’s important to do both.
There are a lot of things that were indoctrinated within us in this country. There are things we were taught that need to be unlearned.

I’ll add more as I think of them! Please enjoy, and continue to inform yourself ❤️ Live link to these resources here https://bit.ly/3eYb8s1 (in case there are updates)

Books I also recommend trying them out as audiobooks if you don’t have as much time as would like to read (I’m guilty!)
1. Colony in a Nation https://amzn.to/377oxva Nonfiction
2. Homegoing - Yaa Gyasi https://amzn.to/3dRqte5 Fiction!

4. And literally anything by Ta-Nehisi Coates https://amzn.to/2Y7C2H5
TV
1. The Wire (HBO)- 5 seasons 2002-2007
1. How does this system work? And what are the practical implications on a community?
2. Black Mirror (Netflix) - Men Against Fire (S3Ep5?) (1 hour) ***extremely graphic warning!!!!!
1. I can’t spoil it, sorry!
3. Mixed-ish (ABC) 1 season 2019
1. It can be campy and silly, but it’s cute and funny and relatable. If you want something that can convey a message, it is not so intense and it tells the story of a biracial middle-school girl in 1985 and examines and explains parts of our societal structures from the eyes of someone for the first time (Sound familiar to anyone?). History is EVERYTHING to me, and this show does a great job of informing while still somehow managing to make you smile or cry happy tears. Prob ok for kids.
4. When They See Us (Netflix) 2019
1. Very important watch. It’s traumatic but do not look away. This is a portal into the inside of how we have treated our young men in this country.
Documentaries/docuseries
1. The 13th (Netflix)
2. Adam Ruins Everything (TruTV)
1. Probes our longstanding beliefs as a society. You’d be surprised what we ALL have just accepted as fact but ends up just being corporate propaganda
3. Owned: A Tale of Two Americas (2018) (Prime, rentable on Youtube etc)
1. Deep dive into our housing market
Podcasts
1. Why is this Happening? Chris Hayes
