General Information: The B-58 Hustler was a massive technological leap for the United States Air Force, requiring advanced materials and highly complex analog computers to manage its bombing and navigation systems. Because of its extreme speed and the necessity to deploy large numbers of aircraft quickly in the event of an attack, the Air Force conducted the Open Road III program to perfect Minimum Interval Takeoffs (MITO). Crews learned to launch their 163,000-pound aircraft with only 15 seconds of separation, flying directly into the turbulent exhaust of the preceding bombers to ensure the fleet could escape an incoming ICBM strike.
