DIY Icepick. Easy, Cheap, Useful!
This video is ABSOLUTELY inspired by Jimmy Diresta. I have been a fan of Jimmy Diresta for years, and have always thought an ice pick would be a great tool to have around. I made a little one from a small pocket screwdriver a while back because I needed a sharp pointy tool for a project I was working on and as it turns out I use it all the time.
This time I took a longer screwdriver and sharpened it to a point using my 6 inch sanding disk with some 80 (maybe 60) grit paper. A small scrape of plywood with a rabbet cut in the end gives me a lot of control and allows for a nice even taper on the pick. Much better than the first one I did freehand.
I probably didn't need to harden the ice pick, but I let it get too hot on the sander a couple times so I didn't think it would hurt to try. I'm sure I did it wrong, but I heated the pick in a torch flame until it was as close to cherry red as I could get, then quenched it in water (should have used oil maybe) and then shined it back up with a 120 grit sanding sponge. I put it back in the flame until I saw the steel near the tip turn a straw color, then let it cool off in it's own time. A final polishing with the sanding sponge, and it was done.
This will be a very handy tool in my shop, and in yours too if you want to give it a try. It's really easy to do with pretty simple tools, and only took about 15 minutes to make. All that being said, someday I'm gonna buy one from Jimmy Diresta, but for now this one will do the trick.
