🇸🇸 South Sudan - Vice President Addresses UN General Debate, 76th Session (English) | #UNGA
Rebecca Nyandeng De Mabior, Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan, addresses the general debate of the 76th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (New York, 21-27 September 2021).
South Sudan’s Vice President Rebecca Nyandeng de Mabior said, “the development of the Revitalized National Development strategy is the government of South Sudan’s clear and deliberate road map to accelerating the implementation of our assets, while laying the foundation of sustainable peace and the stabilization of our economy.”
Addressing at the General Assembly Debate today (24 Sep) in New York, Vice President Nyandeng de Mabior said, “It is a painful and shameful situation for a country endowed with vast fertile land to be regarded as poor.”
She said, “we must ensure peace and security in the country and double our efforts to support our people who wanted to return and are returning to their area of origin for them to participate fully in nation building and contribute to bringing food security to the country.”
The Vice President noted that at her country’s independence, the international community pledged to help build the capacity of the country in all areas of nation-building. As a result, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) was created to help establish the foundations of our new nation.
However, she said that after the outbreak of the war, that vision was abandoned, and priority was placed on protecting civilians and providing humanitarian assistance. As a result, support for capacity building was terminated.
The Vice President reiterated, “the protection of civilians is a priority.” adding that since she is responsible for the Humanitarian Cluster in her government, she champions this cause, “but it should not be at the expense of capacity building and sustainable development.”
Nyandeng de Mabior continued, “building state’s capacities to govern responsibly and effectively is essential. It is also necessary to guard against the unintended consequence of dependency on humanitarian assistance.”

The UN General Assembly (UNGA) is the main policy-making organ of the Organization. Comprising all Member States, it provides a unique forum for multilateral discussion of the full spectrum of international issues covered by the Charter of the United Nations. Each of the 193 Member States of the United Nations has an equal vote.
The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945. Currently made up of 193 Member States, the UN and its work are guided by the purposes and principles contained in its founding Charter.
The UN has evolved over the years to keep pace with a rapidly changing world.
But one thing has stayed the same: it remains the one place on Earth where all the world’s nations can gather together, discuss common problems, and find shared solutions that benefit all of humanity.
