A recent study mapping antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in wastewater across major Indian cities reveals a growing public health threat. Despite variations in bacterial species, similar resistance mechanisms are emerging, allowing microbes to evade antibiotics. The study highlights gene-sharing among bacteria and stresses the need for wastewater-based surveillance. AMR, driven by misuse of drugs and poor control measures, is making infections harder to treat and increasing risks globally, demanding urgent monitoring and policy intervention.
