CHERYL WHITE - THE RIDE TO OBLIVION

Black jockeys were prohibited from the sport of horse racing for much of the 20th century, however they were deeply involved in the history of thoroughbred racing, even dominating the Kentucky Derby. Black jockeys and horsemen dominated the sport of Thoroughbred racing, from the first Kentucky Derby in 1875 through 1903, right before the Jim Crow era pushed them out.
Enter on the racing scene Cheryl White, who in 1971, became the first Black female jockey in the United States. White was on her way to making history. Cheryl White broke barriers, not just in the starting gates in the racing industry, but as a groundbreaking leader as the first Black woman to hold a jockey’s license to race in the United States. She was just 17 years old, stood 5-foot-3, and weighed 107-pounds.
The story of the girl who rode a path for women and Black people in a sport that has historically sidelined both is virtually unknown. Her accomplishments in a more than two-decades-long career that included an astounding 750 winning rides in several disciplines, are largely forgotten.
